Understanding the Major Guidans

The desire of students to have an in-depth knowledge of the Guidance and Counselling Services necessitates the idea for this book. Its sixteen chapters have attempted to introduce the Guidance and counselling services to those coming into the Counselling profession. To give them a good starting point, the book starts with a brief history of the evolution and development of modern Guidance and Counselling in Nigeria, while chapter two identifies some salient services in Guidance and Counselling programme. Chapters three to fifteen of the book handle the respective services and their role in educational and social development. The thirteen chapters discuss the concepts, aims, approaches and functions among other salient issues of the respective services. Chapter sixteen evaluates the general performance of the services in helping the society. The good presentation of the work makes it very easy for students to read and comprehend I recommend this book for those that need to understand the basic rudiments of the Guidance and Counselling services. The materials in the book are gathered from competent sources which are all acknowledged as per the references lists. I am grateful to all that have provided the information, services, financial and moral support which helped in the completion of this book.

The gruesome murder of his mother and younger brother coupled with the death of his sister which Sesange attributed to acts of revenge by the Chairman against the Chacha family, caused him to drop his academic pursuit in a conventional institution of learning for a school for vendetta. Though bizarre and outlandish, Sesange saw his actions as not enough to appease his anger.

My inspiration to write this book stems from my experience as a driver with the International Centre for Aids, Treatment and Care Programme (ICAP), an organisation which was established with the support of the U.S government to see that people are not dying from HIV. ICAP had the mandate to work in Nigeria for five years before it metamorphosed into an indigenous organisation which is known today as the Center for Intergrated Health Programme (CIHP) under the directorship of the amiable and hardworking Dr Bola Oyeledu who started with ICAP as Country Director before becoming the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Centre for Integrated Health Programme where she has and is still saving many lives.

We yield to the temptation of stealing from Abraham Lincoln and submitting here that a festschrift is the celebration of scholarship by scholarship for scholarship. The present festschrift is a collection of essays by various academics on various topics of language and literature in commemoration of Professor Tyohdzuah Paulinius Akôsu’s 60th birthday. Unfortunately, against all our wishes and efforts, the book has come out so late that the best place to commence these prefatory remarks is by apologizing to Professor Akôsu in whose honour the project is intended. We hope that even though our efforts have not been equal to our good intention

Regetting My Priesthood

Regetting My Priesthood

Poetry can reveal to us not only the struggles of other people but also our own. In this collection of reflections and reminiscences, the poet reveals an inner world of loneliness, fear and despair known to priests who take vows that require giving up everything in exchange for service to God. But in between these inner struggles, there is an undercurrent of optimism provided by the poet’s conviction about trust in God who always listens and understands.

This story is a simple one that shows the destructive power of greed and envy. It shows the evil of cultic oppression in the land and how anarchy reign when individualism holds captive, communalism. This short play is rich as theatre and holds exciting possibilities as dances, music, narration, poetic language and all, heighten and regulate audience mood. It is a producer’s delight. At another level, the play brings to focus the immensely rich proverbs of the Tiv lexicon. This is a real contribution to the national heritage.

The Way Newspaper is a monthly publication of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo. Its first edition hit the news stand in February, 2012. The Bishop of the diocese, Most Rev. Micheal Ekwoyi Apochi established the publication with the sole aim of using it to evangelize the people of the diocese. The newspaper since her establishment has continued to improve by the day. It was no surprise that in the 2014 Annual Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Newspaper Merit Award held on 21st April, 2015 at Bishop Kelly’s Pastoral Center, Benin City, Edo State, the paper emerged overall best Catholic Newspaper in Nigeria.

“To break the chain of poverty women need to be empowered even if the men have always operated the “palace-temple-among technology complex” and the women have always operated the “kitchen-gardens-home craft-childbearing complex.” The hope of this study is to address these institutional inequalities by: engineering a re- socialisation process within the dynamics of cultural and social institutions to overcome internalization and inspire empowerment through the media to promote the rights of Tiv women to effectively participate in the democratic processes of rural development through people controlled communities to overcome their marginalization and rural poverty…Over two hundred school girls abducted by Boko Haram, The Chibok Girls that highlighted the agony of women in that part of Nigeria have not been released, a year after their abduction May 2015. This national shame is enough to send the government home, yet it is business as usual with callousness and impunity. The same leadership is seeking sympathy for admitting defeat at elections for conceding defeat; unheard of! Nigeria has become a private property, so much so that violent holding onto power is legitimized and the people owe it a duty to eulogize a rejected leader who is walking the gallery instead of walking the gallows.

Footprints of a Colossus Essays and Testimonies on Professor Charity Angya

I am very honoured indeed to write a brief Forward to this noble account of a purposeful administration by a servant of God, Prof. Charity Ashimem Angya. This modest publication by a group of academics and close associates of the Vice Chancellor has chronicled the unprecedented achievements of the fourth and the first female Vice Chancellor of Benue State University, Makurdi. The book is the account by those who were involved in the administration of the Vice Chancellor from the very beginning of the administration in 2010 to date. The book captures the Christian perspective of public office, the Christian upbringing and family legacies, work ethics and achievements of Prof. Charity Angya. Concrete life testimonies from her family, colleges, brethren and students crown the story of this achiever and University administrator.

I am delighted to be invited to give this Memorial Lecture in memory of a great son of Benue and advocate of youth empowerment—the late Basil Chianson. I never met Basil, but from what I have gathered I understand he was a mercurial man who had the courage of his convictions. He is fondly remembered for being principled, courageous, feisty, honest, straightforward and humble. I am also told that he was an embodiment of self-sacrifice.

Elements of Communication Formated

Elements of Communication Formated

This is a fresh individual study cum instructor’s book in the continual effort to produce appropriate pedagogic materials for the enrichment of English language skills in Nigerian schools. After over two decades of teaching, organising, supervising, and examining Communication Skills in English at tertiary level, the author is well equipped with the requisite knowledge and experience for designing and producing such a comprehensive resource. There is no gainsaying the crucial need for Nigerian students generally to upgrade their English language competence, in order to remedy their weak foundation in this respect. The chief reason for this appalling quality of use of English is their very deficient primary and post- primary background. This regrettable state is, in turn, attributable to the overwhelming demand for places in our public schools; the concomitant bloated enrollments; inadequacies in educational facilities, teaching/ supervision, staff motivation; as well as the comatose or dead reading culture among students and teachers alike.

Dont Let Ignorance Destroy Your Health

Dont Let Ignorance Destroy Your Health

With so much time spent as an alternative Health practitioner, a book by a patient turned practitioner and a friend is in my opinion a great testimony to the efficacy of traditional or as the author puts it in the book “Food is Gods own prescription for prevention and cure of Diseases” as the way to everlasting health and wealth. A good understanding of the basics of wellness is what the book strives to achieve and that if grasped will ultimately be of immense benefit to both the practitioners and patients as the cost of ill health is prohibitive in terms of finance, energy and time to both the care givers and community. A healthy population is a productive and happy population.

Child Education and Parenting in African Traditional Society

Child Education and Parenting in African Traditional Society

Uploaded by BAHITI AND DALILA

Education as a process of acculturation exists in every culture of any people in the world with the aim of meeting the needs of the learner and those of the immediate community as well as the wider society. This process of educating or training the younger generation and gradually integrating them into meaningful and functional adult life does not necessarily mean literacy and is not limited to occurring within the four walls and corners of a classroom. The health and wealth of any nation depend on its educational system and thus no society can rise above its level of education; be it African or European. Charity they say begins at home. This is because the home is the first environment the child finds him/herself. Therefore, the family which is the smallest social unit of the society serves as the base for the success or failure of education of all kinds anywhere in the world.
