Through visual communication, any person at any level is capable of making a statement about himself and his environment in a contemporary form that could scarcely be forthcoming by other means of expression. Visual Communication Education in Nigeria is still in a rudimentary stage and needs to be clearly re-defined and restructured both in terms of the basic concept and the curriculum for instruction from primary to university levels. This book is in part, designed to reveal the new perspectives in the field of Visual Communication, which should be of interest to instructors and students in art colleges, polytechnics and universities; as well as researchers and media practitioners. The volume will also help create aesthetic interest in the casual reader and eventually increase the relevance of visual art in our environment. Chapter one introduces the conceptual framework for visual communication while chapter two analyses visual communication in the context of media as a whole. Chapter three provides the professional perspective into the current state of the art in the practice and application of visual communication as an important instrument for social and economic development. The author perceives this work as a fundamental approach toward the design and implementation of visual media for social and economic development in Nigeria. Through out this book, the concept of design and communication is viewed from a wholistic perspective to demonstrate its critical role in human development. The need to develop an international visual language and codes of communication as perceived by such pioneer artists and designers as Otto Neurath must be properly viewed as the precursor contemporary efforts to con tribute to the emerging theory of visual communication.
