Abstract

We yield to the temptation of stealing from Abraham Lincoln and
submitting here that a festschrift is the celebration of scholarship by
scholarship for scholarship. The present festschrift is a collection of
essays by various academics on various topics of language and
literature in commemoration of Professor Tyohdzuah Paulinius
Akôsu’s 60th birthday. Unfortunately, against all our wishes and
efforts, the book has come out so late that the best place to commence
these prefatory remarks is by apologizing to Professor Akôsu in
whose honour the project is intended. We hope that even though
our efforts have not been equal to our good intentions, the professor
will forgive this shortcoming and consider this volume as fulfilling
its purpose, which is to be a scholastic tribute to the 60 years of his
impressive academic life. Similar apologies also go to the contributors
to this volume who have waited for so long, often in understandable
confusion and probable frustration, for their essays to come out in
this shape; we sincerely apologize to them for this delay and trust
that this eventual publication of the book would atone for however
they think they have been sinned against.
