ENGLISH

The Elements of English Grammar

By Aboki Associates

Summary

Nigerians. It is the language used in government service;
it is the language of law, mass media, education,
economic transactions, and other sectors.
Considering the prime position that English occupies
in Nigeria, the author recognises the fact that the
learners of English cannot attain acceptable competence
in the language without a mastery of its grammar.
The author has observed, with dismay, the poor level
of the communicative competence of secondary school
leavers and the generally embarrassing performance of
Nigeria undergraduates and graduates in the use of
English. Educationists, parents, teachers and the general
public have also lamented over this unfortunate trend.
For most learners of English, therefore, there is the need
for a clear, concise book aimed at raising the competence
and improving the proficiency in the use of English. This
is what the author has set out to do in this book.

Abstract

The study of the grammar of English is an indispensable
part of learning English. This is more so since the English
language occupies an important place in Nigeria and in
other parts of the world. As a former British colony,
Nigeria uses English as a second language and it
performs many other important functions in the life of
Nigerians. It is the language used in government service;
it is the language of law, mass media, education,
economic transactions, and other sectors.
Considering the prime position that English occupies
in Nigeria, the author recognises the fact that the
learners of English cannot attain acceptable competence
in the language without a mastery of its grammar.
The author has observed, with dismay, the poor level
of the communicative competence of secondary school
leavers and the generally embarrassing performance of
Nigeria undergraduates and graduates in the use of
English. Educationists, parents, teachers and the general
public have also lamented over this unfortunate trend.
For most learners of English, therefore, there is the need
for a clear, concise book aimed at raising the competence
and improving the proficiency in the use of English. This
is what the author has set out to do in this book.
This book is primarily concerned with those aspects
of English grammar, which have over the years been of
particular interest to many students but, which have
somewhat been difficult and confusing. The areas we
have focused on are specifically the elements of
grammar that are needed in preparing for examination
in the Use of English programmes in the Universities,
Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, and the Senior
x i
Secondary Schools.
This book will be useful to all learners who find it
difficult to understand texts in English, especially those
written by foreign authors. This is because the topics
discussed have been made quite easy to understand.
Adequate examples have been supplied to illustrate
every point made and attempts have been made to avoid
highly technical linguistic terms. Where the use of such
terms is inevitable, adequate explanations and
illustrations are provided.
It is my hope that this book will be a great asset to
students and other learners of English, as well as to the
general public, who may need a quick and rewarding
look at some elements of grammar. At the same time, I
hope it will serve as a reference book on specific language
topics for teachers of English.
When all is said and done, no book is perfect. We,
therefore, welcome constructive comments and
suggestions from teachers and students of English, who
will use this book. We look forward to hearing from you.
