Abstract

This paper focuses on the poor link between gender
mainstreaming strategies and the country’s cultural context.
Mainstreaming strategies havenot borrowed the rich sociocultural
contexts which are not related to the country’s
intellectual environment. The first section of the paper is devoted
to conceptualising gender and gender mainstreaming in
contemporary Nigeria. The paper argues that the importation
of western approaches is a deliberate social process by western
scholars and development practitioners who are driven by the
logics of modernization. Scholars tend to present African cultures
and traditions as the reasons for the prevalence of poor
responsiveness to gender mainstreaming and the social
acceptance of the concept. With relevant illustrations and cases
this paper demonstrates the need for Nigerian’s mainstreaming
strategies and programmes to consider economic, social, religious
and cultural realities. It is against this background that the paper
concludes that gender mainstreaming as a human right
perspective would remain an illusion unless careful attention is
given to the causes and trends that do take into account Nigeria’s
rich socio-cultural environment.
