Summary

This book, Introduction to Special Education for Schools and
Colleges, is designed to upgrade teachers and teachers in
training by providing basic information on characteristics
of various categories of exceptional children, provides also
information on the causes of various impairments, helping
teachers identify exceptional children within and outside
their classroom, helping teachers to get use to various
methods of teaching exceptional children in-inclusive
settings, and also helping teachers develop positive attitudes
towards exceptional persons.
This book consists of eight chapters covering various
aspects of special Education; Namely; Definition of special
education, terms used in special Education, Philosophy of
Education for exceptional persons, Provision of Education
for exceptional children. Other areas covered by the book
include Historical Developments of Special Education in
Nigeria, Mental Retardation, the Gifted and Talented,
Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Disorders,
Hearing Impairments, Visual Impairments and Blindness,
Emotional and Behavioural Disorders, Physical and Health
impairments, Inclusive Education and Attitudes and Beliefs
about Disabilities.

Abstract
