This study examined the level of awareness and effectiveness of environmental education among tertiary students in Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. A self- designed, structured questionnaire was used on a sample of one hundred (100) students to elicit information from them on their knowledge of environmental education. Mean, standard deviation and t-test were employed to analyze the data obtained. The findings revealed that most students were aware of the key environmental issues and they also understood the causes of some of these environmental issues. The findings further shows that students had ideas about the problems facing the effectiveness of environmental education. This data was used as a springboard for exploring ways by which environmental education (EE) in tertiary institutions might capitalize on student knowledge, and hence progress towards environmental action taking; and how this might occur through tertiary students being nurtured into the role of informed decision-makers and action-takers. Furthermore, it is therefore recommended that interactive teaching methodologies should be adopted in enhancing active teaching and learning of Environmental Education. The study finally concluded that environmental education in tertiary schools must be given equal importance like other conventional courses so that students who are the future citizens must be encouraged in eco- friendly activities for solving environmental problems.
In this period of economy set back and stagnancy, which has resulted into a frequent vociferous cry of the masses, we need other practical and workable channels that can bring forth economic revival and multiple employments for the masses. Hence, this study critically reveals and elucidates the unnoticed vocational aspects of physics and the principles guiding them. Some of these vocational packages in physics are electrical repairs or installation and electronic appliance repairs or assembling, building of local boat, setting up of solar panels. Other realistic skills identified and explained in this study include operation of optical service centers, production of mirrors, assembling of some optical instruments such as camera, periscope and projectors, installation of refrigeration and cold room gadgets, setting up of x-ray and ultrasound services etc. the barriers that limit physics education from fully reaching and realizing the desired apogee of vocational exploit, entrepreneurship, economic development and the mechanism required to remove the limitation were also emphasized in the study.
The condition of Nigeria’s economy in this current dispensation is fast becoming unbearable, prior to the inaccessibility of electricity by 60% to 70% of the masses, and the insufficient circulation of fuel energy. This is a problem at hand! If there must be a buoyant economy, then there must be reliable channels through which energy can be generated from steadily. Our problem in Nigeria as far as energy supply is concerned is that we usually put all our focus and struggles on a particular channel when there are other doors of opportunities that are open wide for us to diversify into. Solar energy, an energy obtained from the sun, is the world’s most abundant and cheapest source of energy available from nature, through which energy can be generated at ease. It is free and renewable. Therefore, as far as this study is concerned, the main point of focus will be on the use of solar system in Nigeria as an alternative source of energy generation considering its importance. The paper will also takes a look into the current problems encountered during the operation process and the use of the solar system, and the preferred solutions with more attention being paid to domestic and industrial utilization.
The introduction of forage legumes into grass pastures has generally improved grazing animal production by increasing total edible biomass and nutrient profiles. An experiment was designed tostudy the performance of sheep grazing Brachiaria decumbens, Panicum maximum and Pennisetum purpureum in combination with Gliricidia sepium. Eighteen paddocks of approximately 0.03 ha were used in the tra Nine of the paddocks had Gliricidia sepium alley planted in rows 4 mapart and interplanted with 4 rows of either Brachiaria decumbens, Panicum maximum, or Pennisetum purpureum. The other nine paddocks had only the grass species withoutthe Gliricidia sepium. The paddocks were each grazed by 3 sheep. The pure grass stands without the Gliricidia sepium served as controls for the grass species in combination with Gliricidia sepium. The three grasses and their combinations within the alley plots were replicated three times.The animals weregrazed continuously for 28 days in the sub plots. Sheep grazing the Gliricidia/Panicum plot had a higher (P < 001) growth rate (38 g d-1) than those animals grazing both the Gliricidia/Bracharia (23 g d-1) and Gliricida/Pennisetum (21 g d-1) plots respectively. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between sheep grazing the Gliricidia/Bracharia and Gliricidia/Pennisetum plots. The total dry matter intake of sheep on the Gliricidia/Panicum plot was higher (P < 005) (1.33 kg DM d-1) than that of sheep on Gliricidia/Bracharia (0.86 kg DM d-1) and Gliricidia/Pennisetum (0.43 kg DM d-1) plots respectivey. The total biomass from the Gliricidia/Bracharia (23 t ha -1)and Gliricidia/Panicum (21 t ha -1) plots respectively were higher (P < 001) than the total biomass from the Gliricidia/Pennisetum ( 13 t ha -1) plo. These results demonstrate that grazing West African dwarf sheep in a Gliricidia sepium/Panicum maximum plot improved their growth rate during dry season when feed supplies are limited. It also underscores the poor performance of animals
The inability of the Nigerian Police to control the increasing wave of crime has led to proliferation of vigilante groups in contemporary Nigeria. This study was initiated to investigate the impact of vigilante groups on crime control in contemporary Nigeria, particularly in Egor LGA of Edo State. This study uses one of statistical test chi-square (χ2) to test for the impact of vigilante activities on crime rate in the society. The results revealed that there is a significant relationship between vigilante activities and crime rare in the society. It also reveals that there is a significant relationship between the performances of vigilante group on reducing criminality.
Literacy is the crux of schooling. The primary motive of any average student is to acquire a competent reading and writing ability or skill. But unfortunately, many students found themselves to be struggling with what others found to be so easy and simple: they struggle with reading the alphabet, knowing it and being able to write it when the need arises. Thus, they see themselves as primitive fellows in a world of growing literacy. Despite normal intelligence, many students assume themselves to be nothing but people with empty brain, unfit for the clarion call for literacy. They feel inferior, incompetent and unprivileged literary lovers. They develop low self esteem and if care is not taken, they get drowned into the slough of despond.
This article is not to discourage those of prospective students that have chosen the under listed schools as their most preferred universities in JAMB.
