Man often causes ecosystem changes due to activities such as agricultural clearing, rangeland grazing, urbanisation, road construction and mining (Majer and Beeston, 1996). Such activities can affect genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity (WRI, IUCN and UNEP, 1992). Loss of biodiversity is a great problem of environmental and ecological consequences and humanity depends on biodiversity for fuel, food medicine and raw materials. The continuous removal of forests for various agricultural and industrial purposes has caused the loss and degradation of the primary tropical forests, leaving only man-made ones. This destruction causes extinction or loss of richness for those species whose habitats have been altered by man (Adebayo, 1995).

This research has shown that it is feasible to embark on local production of toothpicks and put a permanent stop to its importation into the country. It will only demand 200 bamboo toothpick making machines to produce the number of toothpicks consumed per day during importation. This local production has some non quantitative benefits associated with it such as: job creation for skilled and unskilled workers; it will also bring about the reduction in capital flight in the nation’s economy and it will also help in preserving the foreign exchange of the nation which shall be helpful during economic crises, natural disasters and emergencies. There is the need to encourage private investors, most especially wood based investors and non-governmental organizations in the utilization of bamboo as an alternative to wood products and also the production of toothpicks in Nigeria since there is abundance of the raw material in the country and considering the non quantifiable benefits it stands to provide.
