With the current interest in household and industrial automation, developing a smart system that monitors and controls household appliances, industrial machines, military/hospital devices and security gadgets, etc, with low latency response is pertinent. This paper proposed Mechatronics based feedback vector control with Ardinuo IoT device. An embedded process lifecycle framework is employed in realizing the system. Dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) codes and SMS feedback are applied. The system features Arduino UNO, GSM module with SIM card, ULN2003, DTMF decoder (MT8870D), buffer (74HC24), 12v-Relay, Bulb with lamp-holder, connecting wires, PCB, 16x2 LCD, Power supply unit, Mobile cell phone, and an external interface box module. A design algorithm that demonstrates the sequence of control operation is implemented. An initial satisfactory tests result has been obtained from Protus ISIS simulation. This work concludes that sensing and actuation dynamics with IoT edge computing offers the smartest capability for Industry 4.0
This paper presents the design and implementation of a universal intelligent control system that automates the operation of an aquarium system called Aqua-tronics. In our approach, the water temperature control, lighting of aquarium environment, feeding of fish, draining and infilling of the aquarium tank are all automatically controlled by a software embedded in an intelligent controller. The aquarist through the keypad interfaced to the controller can select the range of temperature and the feeding time, thus the system is universal and user-friendly. Essentially, the cloudiness of the water is detected automatically using dirty water detector enabling the controller to drain and refill the tank as at when due. The prototype aquarium was simulated using Proteus development tool before the building of the physical system. Summary tests are also outlined in this work.
Intelligent energy management strategy for cost optimization offers a new paradigm for energy users in Nigeria. This research developed Arduino based energy consumption rate meter for residential homes using multidisciplinary concepts in Mechatronics. The system features real time demand side management using composite design methodology (CDM). It comprises the metering and cloud server cluster units. The work introduced ACS712 Hall Effect current sensor, Arduino Uno (with ATmega328 chipset), and SIM800L GSM modules to achieve the system functionalities. The design description on editor run-time environment enabled direct debugging in the open source Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The approach was evaluated through selected case studies and usability experiments. With the latter, the suitability of the system provided an efficient means of monitoring energy consumption with minimal errors. The results showed that when the meter was switched-ON with no load, an output of 0.00kWh was read. By connecting i-core7 Dell Inspiron laptop to it, an output of 10.75kWh was then observed on the cloud web application (real time). The output kept increasing whilst the load was still connected to the meter as expected. Utility companies can smartly provide value-added services using the system, thereby increasing their revenues while ensuring customers satisfaction.
Pests have continued to be problematic in warehouses of most feed mills and food manufacturing industres. Pests are heterogeneous both in space and time, creating gradients and patterns depending on the prevailing environmental variables. Pest control efforts have utilized manipulations of these variables. This project is ona module for thermal control of pests using the hitherto waste steam from the indusries. The module is an engineering contraption, which uses steam to raise temperature within it to insecticidal levels (above 45°C). This causes halt in development and proein denaturing (leading to mortality) of the pests (eggs, larvae and adults). This applied heat also toasts the material inside the module thereby improving its quality. The module consists of a rotary drum with steam passing through convoluted tube (without coming in contact withthe handledmaterial), with a capacity o 2 tons/hr o commodities. It accepts steam at 130°C and discharges it at 110°C. The steam pressure (permssible) is 2.7 bars. Steam velocity is 8m/s. The volume of the drum is 4 m3. A two- screw- 90 degrees-lead –counter screw-rotation typebaffle is installed to achieve even distribution of heat on the material within the drum. The moduleis efficient, effective and useful in any integrated pest management effort.
